Here, past the guard shack, barns come alive before dawn. Workers set out bridles and saddles, muck stalls, fill water buckets, organize feed, wrap legs, medicate, pick hooves, and walk horses. Soon, exercise riders will be up on horses, threading their way to the track. In Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella’s barn, grooms lead elegant, gleaming horses around the shed row as Mandella and his assistants Angel Vega and Alex Bisono plan the complex lives of 4. The horses range from unproven 2- year- olds seeing the track for the first time to three- time Eclipse Award winner and two time Breeders’ Cup winner Beholder. Mandella’s barn is a busy but orderly place, filled with a staff of 3. The aisle is swept, horses stand in knee- high fresh straw and every aspect of their feeding, care and training is scrutinized. On this day, the whole place has a certain calm rhythm.“Generally it’s this way, but it’s by design,” says Mandella. But after more than four decades of training, much of it at the highest levels, Mandella’s attention sweeps everywhere, down to a loose strap a horse might step through, a new colt restless in his stall, a foot sore mare, a horse whose muscles are cramping up. Assistant trainer Angel Vega stands at the head of a sensitive gray 2- year- old filly. He is practicing what handlers do in the starting gate, making the horse stand.“Angel, be gentle with her,” Mandella says. Horses, like humans, each have their own personality, he explains while walking across the parking lot. In front of the stands, he watches his horses move, how they’re acting, whether they’re sound enough and in a good frame of mind — all factors he will consider in their training and as he decides whether to enter them in a race. Some just trot or are ponied next to a gentle horse. March 6; $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks, March 14; $750,000 Santa Anita Derby, April 3. Santa Anita conducted its inaugural card on Christmas Day. A one of a kind experience to shoot a historic sports palace and the spectacular horses that live there.Meet at Clocker's Corner at 7:30 amBreakfast served at 10:00. Overview of A Day at Santa Anita, 1937, directed by Bobby Connolly, with Marcia Ralston, Milton Kibbee, Cyril Ring, at Turner Classic Movies. Had a wonderful day at the races. Enjoyed the delicious buffet spread of mixed baby green salad with ranch dressing, pas. Others canter or gallop. And then some have a faster workout. The type of exercise varies for each horse, depending on when they last ran, when they are scheduled to run next, and how they are feeling in general. Today, Mandella is paying particular attention to two dark bay mares, Majestic Heat and Avenge. Majestic Heat just won the Solana Beach Stakes on Aug. Avenge won the John C. He is aiming both at the Rodeo Drive Stakes, but that could change.“If we get a sign, we won’t run them. That’s kind of the way you have to live this life, racing,” Mandella said. Back at the barn, in stall No. Mandella’s office, Beholder relaxes after her workout, pulling at a hay net, calmly surveying assistants and exercise riders coming and going, reporting back, looking for direction. Mandella is in his office, studying paperwork and answering questions from office assistant Patti Eldridge. On the walls of the small office are two frames. One is from the 1. Breeders’ Cup, when Phone Chatter won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Kotashaan won the Breeders Cup Turf. Two of his other horses won stakes races that day. The second is from the 2. Breeders’ Cup, when he ran seven horses and had the best day of his career. Halfbridled won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile fillies; Action this Day won the Bessemer Trust Breeder’s Cup Juvenile; Johar dead heated with High Chaparral for first in the John Deere Breeders’ Cup Turf and Pleasantly Perfect won the Breeders’ Cup Classic. It was a phenomenal day by any standard. When asked if he ever considered any other career, he laughs and quips, “I took some tests for other things, but I didn’t pass. This is the only thing I could pass.”Of all the horses Mandella has trained, Beholder might just be the best. With nearly $5 million in earnings, she is the only filly ever to have won a Grade 1 stakes at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 years old. She is also the only filly in the U. S. She won the Breeder’s Cup Distaff in 2. Grey Goose Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2. California Chrome in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar on August 2. Once again, Mandella is aiming Beholder for the Breeder’s Cup Distaff for fillies and mares, with a possible prep race of the Zenyatta Stakes on Oct. She has won the Zenyatta three times. In the No. 1 stall across from Mandella’s office, Beholder relaxes after her workout, pulling at a hay net, calmly surveying the assistants and exercise riders who stop periodically to talk with Mandella. The location seems to suit her. Janeen Painter, Beholder’s exercise rider, walks by. Painter describes Beholder as smart and professional under saddle. She’s not messing around, that’s for sure,” Painter says. Asked if Beholder knows how good she is, Mandella quips, “Oh yeah.
